It is believed that the Finns moved from the Ural area in the early first
century AD. For a time Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of the
Russian Empire. Finland declared its independence in 1917 and a republic in
1919. In 1939 the Soviet Union invaded Finland and took some land. After
World War II it tried to retrieve its lost land but ended up giving
the USSR even more territory. In 1948 the USSR and Finland signed an
agreement of assistance. In 1956 Russia returned some land to Finland.
Finland is a member of the Nordic group of five countries that maintain good
relations with the USSR.
